Detox Your Kitchen – Countertops
You should consider detoxing your countertops for your next remodel.
Food is often placed directly on the counter, so your countertops should provide a healthy surface for chopping and preparing your meals.
Is recycled glass safe?
A number of environmentally sensitive options have surfaced over recent years, but some raise air quality concerns. Recycled glass is beautiful and environmentally friendly, but it often is set in a petroleum-derived epoxy or cement substrate that can off-gas hormone-disrupting phthalates into your kitchen.
What about granite countertops? Are they safe?
Granite a standard in homes during the past decade, can emit radon. Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Ask the countertop manufacturer and installer about what kind of adhesive the surface is made from.
I’m terrified, is concrete a safe alternative?
Concrete countertops have recently been growing in popularity. Cement made from fly ash (a waste material from the coal-burning industry) is a fine environmental alternative. Researchers are concerned, however, that fly ash concrete can also emit radon. However, no concrete evidence has been found so far to substantiate this theory. Just to be safe, it is probably best to save this material for outdoor spaces such as an outdoor bar. Overall you should be wary of any sealant that warns you to keep children and pets away while you apply it. Stay informed and stay safe. Your next remodel should not only give your space a new look but your family a new healthy space to cook your meals in.
