Live Edge Floating Shelf & Cabinet
Live Edge Designs are a staple for Blue Terra Design. We designed this live edge floating shelf using walnut wood that was harvested from the Vilas neighborhood in Madison, Wisconsin. There are many design perks that come with using natural wood in spaces. In this case, we kept the live edge on the shelf to give a contrasting look to the lighter color of the sap wood that was used for the accompanying cabinet. However, an edge that is live can also be used to add a rough and rustic look to an otherwise polished space. In either application, the look is more unique when you utilize local wood that carries natural character.
Live Edge Applications
The most common application of live edges in modern design is in the form of floating shelves. Floating shelves have a unique look in and of themselves. As a result, when they are paired with a live edge, it can completely transform a space. When designing a kitchen, it is important to keep in mind the different colors, textures, and angles that are in play. Especially relevant, live edges help break up repetitive straight lines that are often found in kitchens. More importantly, they introduce organic, natural elements to spaces. The mixture of lines with organic elements creates a very soothing visual affect.
In addition, natural wood edges are now being placed in more unique spaces such as bar tops, vanities, and even coffee tables. Blue Terra takes advantage of the characteristics of natural wood in every custom piece we build. As a result, we are partners with Wisconsin Urban Wood. Wisconsin Urban Wood (WUW) is committed to the social, economic, and ecological benefits of urban trees, networking for the highest and best use for every tree 100% of the time.
The highest and best use for any tree, in their view, is for it to grow healthy and strong. When it can no longer serve in this way, best practices are to ensure its highest use by converting the wood into long lived, locally produced goods.
That’s where we come into play. Most noteworthy, in our Blue Terra cabinet line, we focus solely on the use of local, Wisconsin Urban Wood. Therefore, we are able to use unusual wood species in our builds that often carry more character.
